Today you're going to learn how to conjugate -ar verbs in the present tense in Spanish.
Vamos a tomar (take) notas
In Spanish, we must change the verb to agree with the subject. There are two easy steps to conjugating:
All regular -ar verbs are conjugated this way, meaning you only need to memorize the endings and you can use almost any -ar verb correctly!
Example: tomar-to take/to drink
- Drop the infinitive ending, which leaves you with what is called the stem or radical.
- Add the present-tense endings.
Present-tense endings will differ depending on the verb´s infinitive (-ar, -er, or -ir).
- We will use the example hablar (to speak) to show how to conjugate:
- Drop the infinitive ending/find the stem: habl > habl
- Add the present-tense endings for -ar verbs
yo > o
tú > as
él/elle/Ud. > a
nosortros(as) > amos
vosotros(as) > áis
ellos/ellas/Uds. > an
