Saber y conocer (INB 40) Today, we will learn about the verbs saber and conocer. Both of these verbs mean “to know” in English, but they are used differently in Spanish. It is important to learn the difference. First, we will look at the present tense conjugations. Both of these verbs are irregular in the yo form only. They are regular –er verbs in all the other conjugations. Copy down the present tense conjugations of conocer and saber. *** Make sure you pay attention to the yo forms. Uses of saber and conocer: Saber is used to talk about: facts information how to do something things you know by heart.

I brush my teeth. ___________________________ I wash my face. ___________________________ In the present progressive tense remember, I have to be doing it right now: I am brushing my teeth. I am washing my face.

Like we learned before when using the present progressive the reflexive pronoun can be place at the beginning of the conjugated verb and we have to add the ending for your present participle. EX: Ella se está cepillando los dientes However, remember that you also can leave the reflexive pronoun at the end of the reflexive verb. When you have prepositional prhases such as Despues de (after of) (after doing this.. Antes de (before of) (before doing this.. Whenever a verb directly follows a preposition, it remains in the infinitive form and the reflexive pronoun stays at the end. Después de bañarme, / Antes de cepillarte Remember: For reflexive verbs, the ending -se changes to agree with the subject.
OJO: You keep the reflexive pronoun at the end but if you have another independent sentence with another action you keep the reflexive pronoun at the begining. EX:
Después de bañarme, me seco. Antes de cepillarme, me lavo las manos. However If the connector word does not have the preposition "de" you have to put the reflexive pronoun in front of the conjugated word. EX Me acuesto a las 10, después me duermo. Yo me peino pero antes me lavo el pelo. (but)
