¿Qué hora es? What time is it?
Es la __________. It is __________. (only used with 1)
Son las _________. It is _________.
Es la __________. It is __________. (only used with 1)
Son las _________. It is _________.
- Ex. Son las dos. It is 2:00.
- Es la una. It is 1:00.
To say the time between the hour and the half-hour (example: between 2:00 and 2:30), add minutes using y (and)
- Son las + the hour + y + minutes
- 2:10 = Son las dos y diez
- 2:20 = Son las dos y veinte
- 2:15 = Son las dos y cuarto or Son las dos y quince.
- 2:30 = Son las dos y media or Son las dos y treinta.
To say the time after the half-hour (example: between 2:31 and 2:59), go to the next hour and subtract minutes using menos (minus)
- Son las + the next hour + menos + minutes
- 2:50 = Son las tres menos diez (It's 10 minutes to 3)
- 2:40 = Son las tres menos veinte
- 2:45 = Son las tres menos cuarto or Son las tres menos quince
- 12:45 = Es la una menos cuarto. Because the hour after 12 is 1, use the phrase "Es la" instead of "Son las."
AM = de la mañana
- 10:00 am = Son las diez de la mañana
- 6:30 am = Son las seis y media de la mañana
PM = de la tarde (afternoon/evening) or de la noche (night)
- 2:20 pm = Son las dos y veinte de la tarde
- 10:00 pm = Son las diez de la noche
